Tulipa Ruiz, the tradition of Brazilian voices

Efêmera, Tulipa Ruiz

Efêmera, Tulipa Ruiz

Another Brazilian singer is making her way through the world. After her first album was released last year in Brazil, Tulipa Ruiz is now promoted worldwide. That is a good thing : “Efêmera” has been one of the finest jewels in recent months. Tulipa Ruiz, from Sao Paulo, is a complete artist. After working in a communication agency, she resigned in December 2008 to write and draw with her brother. That was the basis for the lyrics and the cover of her first album. At the same time she began participating in shows and her fame grew. Efêmera was released in May 2010 but the international recognition came when she was elected to be part of the music of video game FIFA 11 (like more and more artists nowadays).

Her singular voice puts her in line with other Brazilian singers like Bebel Gilberto, Fernanda Abreu and bossa nova queens like Eliana Pittman, Maysa, Claudette Soares, Elizeth Cardoso or Sylvia Telles. Well, the sensuality of Brazilian voices is always a good starting point, but Tulipa Ruiz does not fall into the trap of repetition. In every song, she brings something new and mixes the traditional bossa nova style with other influences. It can be funk (A ordem das Arvores), pop (Da menina), or even new wave (Brocal dourado).

Her lyrics are poetic (look like a kind of Ronsard style in Efêmera !), talking about time, nature and feelings. Last (unuseful) thing : she said she was given her name because of the movie “The Black Tulip”, with Alain Delon. OK, better listen to her !
